Current Operational Milieu
The subsidisation of bus services through contracts between bus operators and government became the defining element in the business of providing scheduled bus services in the modern era. The evolution of the contracts system over the past twenty years has emerged as the major catalyst to changing operational strategies.
Future Operational challenges
The implementation of the Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) system throughout the Cape Metropole over the next twelve years will see the convergence of current bus and taxi operations. This radical departure from the historical operating environment has demanded creative and visionary negotiating tactics to ensure that GABS enters the new era on a sound footing. The City of Cape Town, as during the pioneering years, has in the context of the current legislation, been assigned as the competent political authority to oversee public transport in the metropole.
